The Significance of Soft Furnishings
Of all the elements to interior design and home decor, soft furnishings are one of the most significant features within the home. They add character to a space and reflect personal touch. My favourite thing about soft furnishings is they are completely temporary and movable elements of home styling.
Much to my bank accounts dismay, I have become a soft furnishings addict and come home with new cushion, towel or linen at least once a month. One of my favourite hobbies is updating and swapping soft furnishings within our home. Yet, no matter how many times I do this, I'm still shocked at the significant impact this has on a space. Here are some of my favourite soft furnishings in our home at the moment:
Rugs
This rug in our living room was one of the first big purchases we made for our home. It has completely transformed the space and added an element of coziness, making the room feel homey. Rugs have the ability to retain heat in the winter and soak up the sound within a room. I frequently change the flat pile rug in our bedroom with this one to alternate textures and colours, this is simple way to enhance the style of our space.
Cushions and Throws
Cushions create a significant impact when styling home furnishings. Without them, a room can feel incomplete and plain. I love experimenting with different shapes, patterns, textures and colours to create a fun and dynamic combination. I then like to add a throw or blanket, I prefer linen or cotton in the summer and wool or fleece in the winter.
Sheer Curtains
Sheer curtains are a fantastic way to soften incoming light and enhance the ambience in a room. We installed these sheers to add a layer of privacy to our windows without compromising on the light. To say they have completely transformed our space is an understatement. They create the illusion of high ceilings and make the room feel more open. I think hanging these from directly below the cornice or from the ceiling is key to achieve this look. The light that filters through them of a morning creates unmatched visual relief, and I love the billowy effect they provide in the summer when there is a breeze.
Towels and Hand Towels
Don't ask me how many towels we have in our linen cupboard. What I will say is I have quite the variety of patterns, colours and textiles to add style to our bathroom, kitchen and laundry. Practicality of towels is of course important, but when selecting products I see it as an opportunity to add a bit of fun to a space.
Have fun with soft furnishings, there really is no right or wrong way to approach this when styling your home. Make your space uniquely yours and use this as a way of expressing your personal touch. Check out my Instagram to see how I've styled some of my favourite soft furnishings around our home.
